ALBA is a third generation synchrotron facility to be constructed and exploited by the consortium CELLS. It is located very near the city of Barcelona, Spain.
 It includes a 3 GeV, low emittance storage ring with a maximum operational current of 400 mA.
In an initial stage, seven beamlines are being built to be operational in 2012. They are as follows: 1) Non-Crystalline Diffraction (NCD) for SAXS and WAXS experiments, 2) Macromolecular Crystallography (XALOC), 3) Photoemission spectroscopy and microscopy (CIRCE), 4) X-ray absorption spectroscopy (CLAESS), 5) High-Resolution Powder Diffraction (MSPD), 6) X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (BOREAS) and 7) X-ray cryo-microscopy (MISTRAL). These initial beamlines are designed to cover a wide range of fields such as materials science, nanotechnology, medicine, physics, chemistry, biology…The beamlines NCD, CIRCE, BOREAS, CLAESS and MSPD are directly linked to the CALIPSO program.
As a new facility, ALBA is starting to participate in European projects and is actively seeking for supporting not only the Spanish scientific community but also the European one. For example, ALBA was participating in the PRE-XFEL (FP7-211604) and in the ELISA (FP7-226716) European projects. Within the present proposal, ALBA will run its Transnational Access Activity.
